With our prose, poetry, and artwork, we are looking for pieces that make us feel something: elation, fear, desperation – whatever. We don’t care what your piece is actually about as long as YOU do. Our goal is to make reading not only a psychological experience, but a physical one too.
That being said, although we accept work in all genres, we tend to accept work that still falls into the “literary” category. For example, we typically don’t publish straight science fiction, but we will publish science fiction that also has literary merit.
We typically DO NOT accept pieces that center heavily on religious issues or contain explicit and/or gratuitous sex.
At Hypertrophic Literary, we don’t believe that being published in one literary magazine gives a writer the reach he/she deserves. Because of this, we have zero qualms against printing pieces that have already been published elsewhere.
We do not currently offer any monetary compensation for being published in Hypertrophic Literary, but will provide each writer who is published with us a complimentary print and digital copy of the issue he/she appears in.
Writers and artists maintain all rights to their own work when submitting to/publishing with Hypertrophic Literary. We only ask for one-time publication rights. Should we wish to re-publish any work in any type of anthology or “Best of” issue, we will ask each contributor individually and separately from his/her original contract.
You have 2 options for submitting to Hypertrophic Literary:
- FREE: Email us your submission as per the guidelines below. It can take up to 3 months for us to review your submission and get back to you.
- FAST TRACK: If you are a current digital subscriber to Hypertrophic Literary or you purchase a digital subscription from our shop, notify us in your email and we will respond to your submission within 2 weeks.
Hypertrophic Literary accepts submissions year-round.
You may submit up to 3 stories (maximum 10,000 words total) or up to 10 poems (maximum 5,000 words total) at once. Excerpts from longer pieces (ie. a chapter from a novel) are also accepted and fall under short story guidelines. Submissions that exceed these word count limits will be rejected without being read.
Please send your submissions as a Word Doc attached to your email, or directly copy and paste it into the body of the email. We do not accept submissions through Google Docs.
Please wait until you receive a response from us before submitting again. If you send two separate submissions at once, we will discard the second one without reading it.
We will respond to everyone within three months from the date of submission unless you use our fast track option; if you are a subscriber to Hypertrophic Literary then we will respond within two weeks. If you have not heard from us within the listed time regarding your submission, you are welcome to email us to inquire on its status.
Simultaneous submissions are accepted.
In your email/cover letter, please include the word count(s) and genre(s) of each piece you are submitting, a brief author bio, and the names of any publications where your submitted pieces have been previously published.
Email: Send submissions to firstname.lastname@example.org and include “Hypertrophic Literary Submission” in the subject line.
Please note we are no longer accepting submissions by mail.
Please let us know if one of your submitted pieces has been accepted elsewhere. If we still wish to publish it, we will make sure to do so after the other issue comes out to avoid interfering with their publication requirements.
